What is a Relaxation/Remedial Massage?
A Remedial or Relaxation Massage is similar in techniques. One of the most useful styles of massage available is remedial massage. The massage therapist will go slower and avoid deeper work that could be at all uncomfortable in a relaxation massage. A relaxation massage is good if you are a beginner or sensitive to pain, or if you have had lots of deep work done the day before
How is the massage performed?
Relaxation massage usually is performed with lighter pressure; however, you should still feel it and its benefits! Relaxation massage mainly focuses on promoting circulation through slow stroking movements. These movements can increase the flow of the blood and lymph which then has many positive effects over our bodies.
Remedial massage is a deeper or stronger massage than relaxation. Remedial massage is about the treatment and ongoing maintenance of soft tissue to manage your injuries, chronic muscular aches and general tension. When there are times if you are suffering from a chronic ailment, brushing or soft rubbing over the skin is not going to help in the recovery. With this in mind a deeper process is needed to increase circulation and relieve the tight restricted muscles or fascia.
The most important aspect of any massage is the communication at the beginning and during of your massage session. Your therapist should be checking with you and making sure you are comfortable with pressure. For example, whether it is too firm or not enough and also your temperature comfort level. While you may feel a little tender in some particular areas, treating that area should help you feel the benefit of greater mobility sometimes immediately. In some the affected areas can take a day or so. Is remedial massage still relaxing? Yes, it is! Massage is great to promote the release of endorphins which reduces stress levels. This in turn promotes relaxation while reducing the production of stress inducing hormones.
